“In Kind” is a correspondence which prompts a trade, barter, or shared exchange spurned by a similar or indicated interest. This exchange “In Kind,” may include literature, art, crafts, zines, or other special items of concern — in which case, a response containing similar or relation items will be sent along with a journal.
For example: You write mentioning that you’ve been reading the work of Kenneth Grant lately. You send along an old
Starfire pamphlet to share. I then respond by sending along a transcribed Kenneth Grant passage, book, or ephemera along with a response — and so it continues.
This practice echoes the information and goods exchange networks found in some occult circles. In the context of occult communities, the practice of writing and responding “In Kind” was taught to me through an acquaintance who was a member of Psychic TV’s information sharing network called Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth. Please consider choosing to write or respond “In Kind.”
Items that I enjoy offering In Kind include the
following small pamphlet journals. They are particularly useful for prompting craft and zine exchanges. These small journals are created for the use of notes, essays, dream records, rituals, recipes, lyrics, or poetry. They may also serve as small grimoires. Along these lines, simple but personal monograms, motifs, or sigilized designs may be added.
The journals are typically:
• 8.5 x 5.5 inches.
• 28 pages of woven ivory paper.
• Hand sewn with Crawford’s Dark Emerald waxed thread.
• Covered with light card stock in black, silver, or dark gold.
• Hand sigilized in black or silver ink.
Journals will contain very slight (but character enhancing) imperfections from folding, crafting process, sewing etc.
