Genii Loci is a twofold project created firstly for the purpose of exploring and reflecting on occult praxis, mysticism, and visionary studies. Secondly, the work seeks to uncover and unfold expression in these areas by way of text, craft, and artistic creation. These dual arenas emerge via personal engagement, community constellation, textual & spoken transmission, and a diverse set of expressive forms. Being primarily concerned with occult and mystical spiritualities, this project naturally engages the religious and folkloric traditions of the globe.

Such practices emerge, propagate, and flourish in a manner inseparable from their respective localities and contexts. These localities stretch to form a living web — a tessellating network that, in a sense, becomes universal by virtue of its continuity and interconnectedness.

In the practices and beliefs of many traditions located in this web, lore regarding indwelling spirits who guard, steward, and protect the land may be found. With this in mind, the tradition of the Genii Loci — the protective “spirits of the place” — felt apt for this project’s name. For one, the name is reflective of occult and mystical traditions themselves as living spirits-of-place. On another other hand, the name also embodies an exploration underpinned locality, place, and community.
